Hey all,

Is there any link between metabolism and body temprature? i mean can one keep track of his/her metabolism by monitoring body temprature at any particular time or even learn if they have a fast or sub optimal metabolism?

Have fun always

You could track your body HEAT and get a good measure of metabolic rate. Just monitoring your body temperature wouldn't do it though.

Dr. Max Kleiber is the first one to really publish any data on the relationship between body heat production and body size. Kleiber showed that the metabolic rate of an animal was proportional to body weight (lbm).

Of course a far easier way than sticking you in a room and measuring your total heat output would be to just track your weekly calories in and weight changes.

In pathologic states where body temp is elevated or depressed, yes this is reflective of metabolic rate, for example, in severe hypothermia your metabolism is slowed down (hence the medical saying, "you aren't dead until you're warm and dead"). But I concur with torelli here, in normal individuals, temp does not reliably reflect metabolic rate. Heat is lost through various means in normal states, and this is not reflected in body temp.

A company called HealtheTech has a portable monitor that accurately measures resting metabolic rate. However, the cost of purchase may be prohibitive. It costs $419 with the capacity for performing 20 tests. After the 20 are used up, you have to purchase additional tests from the company.

However, you may be able to find a clinic or health club in your area that has the device and can perform the test on you for a fee.
