I'm moving to Houston in about a week. I'm looking for gyms online on yellowpages, and all I'm finding are metrosexual Smith machine-oriented establishments like Bally's and 24 Hour Fitness. There are also a lot of "Curves for Women," etc. which is of course out of the question. I've heard some of these places don't even have free weight benches! There are no Gold's, World Gym, Powerhouse, etc. in the entire Houston area.

Often there will be a non-chain gym that is a great place - does anyone know of one in Houston, preferably west Houston/Katy area or the medical center area? I'm basically looking for a place with tons of free weights, power racks, heavy dumbbells, and stuff like trap bars, reverse hypers, and glute-ham raises would be an awesome bonus. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Try some of the links here: http://www.angelfire.com/pe/txpls/gyms.html

I did a search using "powerlifting" as one of the terms, in order to eliminate (hopefully) various "metrosexual" facilities. :D

I've heard that Houston is the most 'un-fit' city in America.
Maybe they just need erp to show 'em how it's done!

Elissa, you are the best.
Awwww... :)

Hope the move goes smoothly - and you find a gym that's a good fit (no John Basedow wannabes allowed! ).

One of the gyms listed in the link is only 5 miles from my new home (a very short hop in a place like Houston). Thanks, you are awesome. You can find anything. Maybe you could locate a Home Depot in Madagascar? J/k.

John Basedow's new commercial, "Take Control Special" = creepy. Look at the hair. Shudder.
