Individuals at healthy weights have about 40 billion fat cells, while the very obese have about 100 billion. And the morbidly obese could have as many as 300 billion.

So once you get obese you get loads of fat cells.

i was wondering can one ever get rid of a fat cell once you have it?Do these cells die after some time or they stay and store all the fat again as oppurtunity comes.

Hypothetically what happens when a person gets lean and stays lean for couple of years. do those empty fat cells die or does body gets rid of them?

have fun always

As far as I know the only way to actually get rid of fat cells is Lipo. You can shrink fat cells though...

Correctomundo!

Most of the fat cells in your body are produced prior to puberty...past that point, fat cells typically grow or shrink (although new ones can be created in extreme situations if the existing cells have reached their max. limit). But once created, they're permanent.

The only people I know that lose fat cells are AIDS patients in a condition called lipatrophy. But you really don't want it to happen.
